What is Reverse Speech?

It is this leading edge technology for accelerating human change. It's applications range from personal development, relationships to health and business. It gives you the opportunity to bring truth to light. This heightened self-awareness supports you in living a life of greater compassion, love and understanding.

Reverse Speech, also called the 'voice of the spirit' is the phenomenon of receiving and identifying messages from the unconscious mind and therefore is another form of human communication. These messages are generated automatically when we speak and are accessed by recording forward speech. This recording is then played back in reverse. The messages or 'reversals' are found juxtaposed amongst the gibberish.

Theory of Reverse Speech

The theory of Reverse Speech, well thought through and written by the founder of Reverse Speech David Oates, states that our brain has two modes of communication as it has two hemispheres, each one being responsible for different functions. One is the conscious forward speech mode, which occurs overtly and is controllable. The other is the unconscious or Reverse Speech mode, which occurs covertly and is uncontrollable.

As Reverse Speech is known to occur mostly in a relaxed state, this mode is formed in the right brain hemisphere, where the emotional function content is located. Both modes compliment and co-exist alongside each other. Conscious and unconscious modes relate to each other and reflect the psyche in the dynamics of interpersonal communication.

With a reversal one looks at the overall complementarity, that is, looks where the reversal occurs in the forward speech as well as looking at paragraph and sentence structure, in fact the whole context. Reverse Speech reveals a persons thought and feeling processes at the time of speech. Everyone can hear and process it, as it occurs in the right brain, the unconscious brain hemisphere, one is unaware of it consciously. Often we call this intuition.

About the unconscious mind

The human mind is multi-faceted. Simply stated the unconscious mind represents our awareness and potential for thought and self-reflection whilst the unconscious mind controls automatic body functions, gives warnings of physical dis-ease and stores memory. It is the unconscious mind that makes us unique. It represents our instinctive wisdom, unconscious thoughts and motives, behavioural patterns and personality structures. At the deeper unconscious level we find the concept of "universal mind" as described in Carl Jung's theory on collective consciousness. At this level universal knowledge stores information outside our own experience. The unconscious mind draws on universal knowledge, the keeper of all events. On the deepest level there is the spirit, which details matters of the soul and can be described as a voice of guidance, insight and truth.

This activity of the unconscious can be found within all aspects of our lives. It is present in our relationships, in our aspirations, our difficulties, health and the fate we attract. There are infinite possibilities for humanity to apply Reverse Speech as an effective tool to reveal a person's unspoken truth, to enhance people's potential and improve the quality of their lives. It can be applied in the healing arts in identifying illnesses and ways of healing as well as in the business world to support and determine the direction one chooses to take.

Reverse Speech metaphors and it's powerful application

David Oates has found that ninety percent of reversals occur in metaphors. Metaphors in language and in forward speech have been always part of our way of communication describing feelings and/or behaviour that are difficult to put into words. Some examples are "you could cut the tension with a knife" which describes a highly emotional charged situation amongst people or 'he stabbed me in the back' which describes betrayal and emotional pain from the person. Thus it is not surprising that we find metaphoric language in Reverse Speech.

The deepest unconscious, the collective unconscious, the part of themind that contains the entire heritage of all knowledge, connects us with our soul, our spirit. Unconsciously metaphors have been systematically handed down from generation to generation through ones interaction and communication with others. This is called 'Oral Tradition Theory' in Reverse Speech. It is a transfer of unconscious knowledge and is transmitted and received unconsciously. This information will be stored again and handed down from family to family, peer group to peer group, person to person.

Metaphors occur at the base level of consciousness where the mind thinks and organises behaviour. Metaphors will use one word in place of many to discuss emotional states and topics that are below the level of consciousness. They indicate an emotion or thought that is difficult to portray and describe the source and operations of human behaviour. In order to change behaviour, one must change the metaphors that structure the unconscious, called metaphoric restructuring. This process can be subsequently used after Reverse Speech analysis. A series of powerful guided visualisations, called Metawalks, are used to alter behavior to desired outcomes.

To stay with one persons truth and to avoid any interpretation of heard reversals Oates pointed out the importance of documenting the reversals in detail and with accuracy. He developed a set of check points, validity factors and categories to ensure ethical accountability. Ulimately it is the responsibility of the individual who expressed the reversal to give it their full interpretation.

Reverse Speech in Children

As reversals are not governed by words but by the sound of speech, reversals can be found in children's sounds. These have been found in infants as early as four months of age. Oates claims that language develops in reverse before it develops forward, the unconscious is able to express itself before speech can be consciously expressed. As the infant continues to develop it's language first are words, then sentences, then metaphors found until conscious forward speech is formed and both modes of communication merge and are used complementary.

About David John Oates and Reverse Speech

It all began in 1983 when Reverse Speech founder David John Oates accidentally dropped his walkman into the toilet bowl, finding it would only play backwards. He was awestruck to hear his first reverse message on the track "Stairway to Heaven", which clearly indicated: "Play backwards, hear words sung".

Fascinated, he expanded his investigations listening to human speech in reverse and wrote the theory of Reverse Speech and Speech Complimentary in the book "Beyond Backward Masking".

David Oates soon began lecturing extensively throughout Australia and the USA and appeared on network TV, instantly giving Reverse Speech an international profile. He is a Master NLP Practitioner and a Certified Hypnotist and started a therapeutic practice using Reverse Speech as a powerful therapeutic tool.

Scientific, investigative and various psycho-therapeutic communities showed great interest in his work. Reverse Speech was made into a course at an Oregon University and is included as part of a police training course in the USA.

Approximately 20 years have past since David Oates started with the exploration of Reverse Speech and thousands of people gained benefits from this remarkable process. He has lectured extensively and appeared on radio and TV shows in Australia and the United States. He published the book "Reverse Speech, Voices from the Unconscious". Recognising the diversity of applications of Reverse Speech and the enormous benefits as a therapeutic and layperson's practice, David continues to research and develop this unique tool.
